  • Thanks Kafka, it does not fully solve the problem yet.
I replied on the other thread. In case anyone is following the solution.

Thanks–it hides them in the dashboard, unless you know where to look. (It also mails them to authors of the post.) I replied in full here:

    kafkaesqui,

    thanks so much for this.

We implemented it, but there’s still two problems.

    This is working:

People who post on my blog are “contributors.” They now cannot see emails / IP addresses in the comments (under “manage” or in the comments on the front end).

    This is not working:

    1/

In the Manage–>Posts, you can click on the number of comments and see the full range of info. on the commenter.

The full information is available whether you were the post writer or not. (It so happens that I don’t even want post contributors to see this.)

    2/

Authors of posts (regardless of status) receive an email notifying them of comments to their posts. Those also show the full IP/email info.

I do not think there is a built in check-box to disable that in WordPress, as I searched for one.

Thanks Kafka! I am trying it out. I really appreciate your work.

I have the same issue as bushtool.

I run a blog where people are writing about concerns and do not want others–even perhaps some contributing authors–to know who they are. I should be able to respect their privacy.

It isn’t necessarily about thinking the contributors will send spam. It is about them knowing who all the commenters are.

As is, I can’t post a privacy policy telling them their emails will not be shared with others.

Some contributing authors have expressed dismay, since they realize they should not be seeing the emails of anonymous commenters.

This is not a non-issue. It affects some of us very seriously. I love WordPress, and frankly, I think allowing contributors who are not allowed to post without moderation to see every commenter’s email (which is not shown to readers) is a design flaw.

This is a real problem for me too.

Like rabmaster, I assign all authors the role of Contributor so I can moderate their posts. I do this because (1) I have a lot of authors, and I want to control when posts appear (spacing them out), and (2) I have a lot of authors who don’t write much, and don’t use spell checkers, and so I like to edit out the surface errors.

However, I want to have a posted privacy policy that assures users their emails are private. This is impossible when all Contributors can see them.

I also blog about an area of business that makes lots of people want to be anonymous and I need to protect that.

I really do not want my contributors to have to post via emails to me–a lot of hassle.

Please, please consider fixing this! There is currently no plugin to provide this functionality.
