I guess I am still hoping some wordpress uber-geek will read this and take pity on me…
Here’s an update. I am doing ok with the replacement page being called titles instead of books. The weird thing is that an old url (the one I was worried about because it’s published out in the world) https://cornucopiapress.com/books/worthfighting just decided to redirect itself to … /titles/worthfighting. So if I type the old url into the address bar, the replacement loads.

If I can count on that, it makes my life easier. But I’m really curious as to why.

Wondering if I shouldn’t get on the server and poke around in the database after all. ??

Ok, so I deleted the page called books. Everything worked fine, including the page called titles. Then I change the “slug” for /titles to /books, and it gave me that 403 again. It remembers.

I sure hope somebody knows something about this.

It’s an actual page, and it has subpages, which work fine.

Well, actually, it doesn’t have subpages anymore, because I moved them to a different page that I created, /titles/

However, I need to figure this out, because our promo material all uses /books/ not /titles/

Frustrating!

Or, if they need to go the other way, it would be sort_order=desc.

A followup:

I’d been thinking of abandoning Wave, but I just couldn’t get happy with that idea, so I decided to buck up and try to fix the problem. I went to a backup, then discovered that the problem had been that my style.css was *empty.*

That’s gotta be caused by editing online, but does anybody know if this is something that is a known problem? Or is the editor eating files a new thing with 2.5?

Just to be clear, it’s the “clear: both;” in your css that’s making them stack. You might want to replace it with “float: left;”

I can find code to change the order in which posts are displayed, but not pages. I’m not sure, but I’m thinking it’s hard coded.

Have you looked at header.php to see? I bet that is where the order would be most easy to change.

Those are most likely plugins and widgets. I would find a theme you like and install it, and then start browsing through the pugins and widgets. There’s nothing like customizing a theme to teach you how it all works.

There are lots of themes that will give you a site that looks somewhat like that. But what are the specific features of that setup that you like?

I just found this cool theme which seems to be designed to make wordpress into a cms. I’m excited about playing with it.

If bad-behavior is a plug-in, you could go in through ftp and delete it, right? That would solve it, I’d think.

Yes, you can do it, and there are so many plug-ins, I have no idea where to start with recommendations. My advice on that subject is to make yourself a cuppa whatever, and spend some time browsing the plug-ins pages.

I’m no techie, but you can take a look at https://pacificmartialartsconference.com and https://lifelovefood.com to see how I’ve used it as a CMS. I love wordpress ??

One thing that will help is to think about what things will count as pages and what will count as posts. That is, what information will be best organized according to categories and tags, and what will be static, and will be navigated in a more straight-forward manner.
