Thanks for your reply, I know how to export from my computer, I was just wondering if there was an easy way of exporting comments from your live site onto the site I am developing offline without rewriting all of the posts and the comments. For example if I was to export from my live site, I would lose the work I had been developing offline because the posts and pages would be overwritten along with the comments. From what you are saying I guess this is not possible. The only other option would be to manage the comments using a third party service such disqus, something I am reluctant to do.

Thanks for your comment, I did not try this as I came across a backed up database on a cloud server that restored my files without having to import the xml file created by WordPress. I did find however that if I repeatedly uploaded the xml file more and more of the contents was uploaded despite getting the 60 sec error message.
