After upgrading manually to 4.2.2, this has been fixed. There were fixes regarding memory usage of regexes and endless loop in tmp file creation, so possibly one of those that was the cause.

@tara yes I can manually install plugins, but the whole point of the updater is to be able to simplify this task…
