Actually, found it myself but for anyone who may be interested by default although there is a single menu 1 listed you need to select it as the Primary Menu in the Manage Locations tab.

I have tried adding additional menu items rather than just menu items linked to pages and not having any luck.

I am using Zerif Lite and have added both an additional Custom Link and a category item but neither are displayed in the menu.
