    Thanks.

Although I haven’t “chosen” to use a virtual robots.txt file. It seems to be a default of WP.

I want to be 100% certain that it’s okay to create a new robots.txt file even though WP creates a virtual one ??

    Hi esmi,

Well, I have some news of which you may be interested…

WP retains the last setting used.

This doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Also, my wife noticed that other WP sites that she frequents also now have linked images along with a corresponding favicon. She hadn’t noticed such links & favicons in the past so we are guessing that this may be a new default setting with 2.9.

Thank you! I will take notice ??

    Hi esmi,

Well, when adding an image to a post, a url to the link can be manually added or the option “none”, “current link” & “link to image” can be selected.

The post images w/ the link to the image url do in fact show the image url in the image editor & the images w/o the link, do not show the url in the image in the editor. I am wondering why our newer posts suddenly, automatically started including links to the image? We did not add the links to the images manually, the links to post images suddenly seemed to become the default.

This is very difficult to explain. I hope I made sense. Thanks

That helps a lot! Although I checked the .htaccess file & didn’t notice any rewrites…maybe I missed it.

I will now of course need to change my permalinks from pretty 1 to pretty 2 just to confirm this ??

But…what about the in post feature that allows for url/permalink alterations? Changing the permalink here for individual posts will redirect accordingly, correct?

Thanks! This is good learning ??

    Thanks esmi!

Now I am really confused ??

“But if an external site has linked to you using the old permalink structure ending with .html, a visitor clicking that link will get your 404 page. Ditto if you’ve linked to one of your own posts within the content of another post.”

Well, then WP would not actually be performing 301’s. However, as I mentioned, I did change the permalink structure on one of my sites to try this supposed automatic redirect by WP & it worked, w/o a redirect plugin. I of course checked the old url’s & they in fact did redirect to the new ones. Keep in mind though that the old permalink structure on this site used the standard WP permalink structure, not one including dates & .html, like my other sits. Hmmm…

    Really?

I have been told otherwise & actually tried this out on another site last night.

I changed the permalink structure via the WP Admin panel-Settings-Permalinks page & ALL of the post redirected from the old permalinks/urls to the new ones.

Considering my new experiment, & what another WP pro has told me, your answer surprises me. Hmmm…Any thoughts? ??

    Thanks ClaytoJames,

Yes, I did see those stats but I was hoping the plugin author would actually confirm that the plugin is set for 2.9 or update it accordingly…

    Hi Michael,

THANKS! I deactivated Super Cache & the update worked. Not sure why the plugin affected the upgrade though.

If you don’t mind, while you’re here…in regards to modifying the php.ini file. I was recently told that the php.ini file only applies to Windows servers & that modifying it servers no purpose if not on a Windows server, that the .htaccess file is the relevant file on a Linux server.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks again,
    Alan

PS- Never had a problem upgrading until today. The only difference is that WP Super Cache is installed.

    Hi Michael,

Changing to 64 didn’t do the trick. I noticed in the file manager that there are copies of every download upgrade ie: wordpress-2.8.5.zip,wordpress-2.8.5.1.zip,wordpress-2.8.5.2.zip & so on. I deleted all but one. I delete all such 2.8.5 files, correct? And then try again.

    Thanks

    whoo…

Thank you for sticking with this. Sometimes it takes a while to get on the same page without the benefit of voice communications ??
