i deleted the plugin and then added a new page (not post) and thankfully it now works.

still seeing a products page not added by me, so this plugin must be doing some kind of redirecting

lesson here is – BACKUP the site before you add any plugins/widgets

had a similar thing, apparently i had run out of disk space for my hosting account. Had to upgrade space and start over.
