disable the google gears add-on in firefox. it will cause a crash when using the lightbox features in WP (such as auto installing plugins and uploading/inserting pics)

A link would be great. I use winzip and just drag and drop the template folder in filezilla. I’ve uploaded all my templates like that with no problem

did you make sure the flashfader.swf file was in the plugins/ folder and not the plugins/flashfader/ folder?
