For people experiencing the same problem:
Trusted Shops suggested to me to use the generic integration instead of the plugin. There is a little guide over here: https://support.trustedshops.com/en/apps/trustbadge-integration/

The code produced in the guide can be placed in footer.php and woocommerce/checkout/thankyou.php of your theme directory.

This solution improves performance significantly. It is clear that the current version of the plugin is (in some cases) very poor performing.
