Zip code with wild card does not work anymore

I updated our tax tables with zip codes with an (*) about 6 months ago so people can use 5 digit and 9 digit zip codes. It worked great! I recently uploaded updated zip codes beginning of February 2017 with the exact same format and it was not calculating tax. I had to remove the (*) for it to calculate 5 digit zip codes. Now it does not calculate 9 digit tax. I can add the (*) but then it doesn’t calculate the 5 digit tax. This is causing problems. Does anyone know a fix or how to force a 5 digit zip code? Thanks!
