• Hiya,

I am looking to get my teeth in to e-commerce websites cos let’s face it, that’s where they money is! ??

I have used foxycart and a few other things but I want to use a full e-commerce. I also really want to stick to wordpress as well as I am not ready to get involved in a new cms system as I am still intermediate with wordpress.

So really I am looking for an e-commerce solution in wordpress. step forward WP E-Commerce.

I have reviews on it although they seem to be from 2008 and Dan, the guy that is behind the plugin, seems to be taking all their issues on board and i think that the plugin has improved a lot in the last 2 years. there are also a lot of videos on it now which is definitely cool.

So I was really wondering what you guys thought? Any of you used it? Anyone have examples of sites they have worked on that use it?

I have installed it and I am psyching myself up to making my first store but I think I need the assurance from you guys that it’s a journey worth taking!!

    Thanks!

    silvers

  • There are many articles strewn around the web about this type of question. You could Google “wordpress ecommerce reviews” or something like that.

Caveat, I have not fully implemented ecommerce with WP. But I’m curious, just like you, and I tested about 5 different WP apps for that. I was discouraged that I didn’t find anything that seemed rock-solid. It made me seriously consider getting a dedicated ecommerce system instead.

WP E-commerce is pretty nice, lots of features, but even in my brief testing, I found bugginess, unexpected results on screens, prompts that pretty clearly weren’t exhaustively tested for all conditions, and so on. To me, if something is a paid app, it had better be squashing those bugs very, very fast, and the thing should be rock solid. (as I recall, there is a free version, but paid add-ons, now that I think about it) I think they have great intentions, but they’re a bit flakey, and not as quick to repair things… at least that’s my impression.

Also, with something as sensitive as ecommerce, it seems like it would be very sensitive to WP’s own upgrades. That’s scary, the idea that a crucial security fix would crush my ecommerce, for instance. Likewise with Calendar and Event apps.

I have also tested Foxy in conjunction with MODx, and I was very impressed with that. Back when it was new, I found a very minor bug, and they fixed it the same day I told them. They have more of a sense of urgency, I think. Or maybe WP E-commerce has too many users and not enough coders.

Still, I bet others would say that it’s fantastic. ??

it works well enough for me. But I don’t accept any personal info on my end, I just use paypal.

It took me a bit of work to get it well integrated on my site, since it pretty much uses a template overlayed on your template….it took me a while to get that custom template thing figured out to look good on my site. I haven’t used any of their paid features, I’m sure it would look better if I wasn’t cheap!

    thanks for your input guys.

i have now implemented it and i think it’s great. i can’t see why everyone (not you guys) are hating on it so badly. i definitely take your point about the fact that you don’t want a flakey e-commerce. but in my limited experience it seems excellent and the options and possibilities are very exciting.

i’ll see if this opinion changes with time but at the moment i would definitely be happy to use it on a client site and start stacking that money baby!!!

if anyone else would like to chime in i would really appreciate it!
