Your site does not support WebP even though it does
-
Hi there, I am getting a message that my site does not support WebP but my hosting provider, HostGator, has confirmed that my site is WebP enabled.
Please could you help to resolve this to improve page load time?

Thanks for reaching out @proudmama2022. With the Performance Lab plugin active can you share your Site Health information here and I can check what is output regarding WebP?
Note that if we can determine that WebP isn’t supported, there will have to be changed made at host level. If you’re host stated that WebP is supported, it may be a case of checking some libraries within your PHP configuration for your current version.
Hi James, Thank you for coming back to me. Is there a way to share the details with you securely? All the best, Louise
No problem Louise, happy to assist.
Is there a way to share the details with you securely?
Unfortunately all communication must be through the forums, as per www.remarpro.com guidelines.
If you wish to share only the Media Handling (WP MEDIA) and Server (WP Server) information from within your Site Health information that should be enough for us to view your current WebP compatibility. You can remove the rest of the information from your Site Health info when pasting into the next response if you wish.
If it is a case that you don’t have WebP support, you may be able to enable this yourself by logging into your hosting control panel. If you’re using CPanel you can check whether
imagick
is enabled (CPpanel > Software > Current PHP version / PHP extensions > Imagick)Let me know if you have any questions with the above.

Thank you James, much appreciated. Please find the info above.

Thanks for sharing @proudmama2022. Based on the information you kindly shared it looks like your setup is compatible with WebP image uploads. When you mention you of a message that that your site does not support WebP, can you share where you see this (ie. Within your Site Health status, as an opportunity)?
You may also with to check can you upload WebP images by default, without conversion from JPEG to WebP. You’ll find an example WebP image which you can use here.
Hi James,
Thank you for coming back to me.
I see the message on the “Site Health” screen, on the “Status” tab, under the “Recommended Improvements” section. The message reads “Your site does not support WebP: The WebP image format produces images that are usually smaller in size than JPEG images, which can reduce page load time and consume less bandwidth. WebP support can only be enabled by your hosting provider, so contact them for more information.”
My hosting provider has provided me with a snip of the database showing me that WebP is accepted. I’m not sure how I can attach it here.
All the best,
Louise
Hi James,
Thank you for the WebP example image.
I have tried uploading it to my website and get the following message in “Media Library”: This image cannot be processed by the web server. Convert it to JPEG or PNG before uploading.”
All the best,
Louise
Hi James,
Here is the snip from my host. They have assured me that WebP is enabled on my site.
All the best,
Louise
Thanks for the update Louise. I’d be happy to check this with the team and report back to you here. Before doing so, can you please perform one additional check (assuming your using WordPress version 5.8 or newer).
- Deactivate the Performance Lab plugin.
- Create a new page or post.
- Upload this image to the post via your standard WordPress media uploader (or check is this image available for upload).
- Share the site URL or check whether the image appears.
As WebP is support via WordPress itself (see this guide), the above will help determine if WebP support is supported by your server. This is independent of the Performance Lab plugin, or any checks added to your Site Health info via the plugin.
Let me know if you have any questions with the above.
Hi James,
Thank you, that is much appreciated.
Yes, I’m on the latest version of WordPress – 6.3.2.
I have tried the above as you recommended and get stuck at step 3, when I try to upload the image file to the media library, with the same error message as before: “This image cannot be processed by the web server. Convert it to JPEG or PNG before uploading.”
All the best,
Louise
Appreciate the update. In that case, if this is occurring without the Performance Lab plugin active, this does unfortunately indicate that something at host level is not configured for WebP support.
As we’re limited to plugin related issues here in the Performance Lab support forums, you can reach out to your hosting provider once more. You’ll know when your site does support WebP by reviewing your Site Health information once you activate the Performace Lab plugin once more.
Thanks James, I appreciate your help with this, and your swift responses.
I’ll try my host again.
All the best,
Louise
No problem, and thank you for your willingness to troubleshooting. If you have any further Performance Lab related queries, be sure to reach out.
