Got the “Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL” error message after upgrading one of our Windows 2000 servers running IIS 4 from PHP 4.4.8 to 5.2.9-2.

After reading many posts online and trying every possible solution, I finally found the problem.

Turns out there was and older version of libmysql.dll in the c:\winnt\system32 folder (probably from the older PHP4 install). I deleted the file, restarted IIS and the MySQL extension loaded.
