Updates are key to defeating the hacking of your site. Easy Updates Manager manages updates for all of your WordPress core, themes, and plugins without your intervention. You can customize which ones and—for WordPress itself—at what level (ie. just core updates vs. core + minor updates).
A lot of hosts will try and upsell you WordPress add-ons that do the same. This plugin does it for free.
If you pair it with UpdraftPlus (another excellent plugin that backs up your site automatically to Dropbox, Google Drive, etc., for a one-click restore) Easy Updates Manager will make a backup before your site is updated.
Add WordFence for hacking and malware protection and your site is as safe as it can be. In the event that it is compromised—and you should always always assume that the worst will one day happen, you can install a fresh WordPress install, install the Updraft plugin and connect it to your Dropbox, Google Drive, etc., and restore a pre-malware version with one click.
WordFence has real time security protection if you subscribe to its premium version but all three plugins deserve your support. Thanks developers!
