I’ve just set up a new GA4 property.

I am trying to use Site Kit to link it to the site. But after Site Kit logs into my Google account and finds the GA4 property, I can’t proceed to the next step because it is telling me, “You need to connect the Universal Analytics property that’s associated with this Google Analytics 4 property.”

I don’t have a UA property associated with this. Since it’s being retired in a few months from now, it makes no sense that Site Kit is forcing me to have a UA property for this site.

    Please explain.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

To get around this, I’ve deleted the GA4 property I originally set up. And created a new one, and disregarded the recommendation to NOT set up a UA property for the site. So I now have a GA4 and UA property for the site.

But it begs the question … why is this necessary?

    Hi Jonathan,

When setting up Site Kit users need to connect both a Universal Analytics (UA) property and a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property. During setup, users are asked to select an Analytics account, and both the Universal Analytics and GA4 properties need to be from within the same Google Analytics account.

Regarding why they need to be associated, some of the configurations at Analytics level me be applicable for that Analytics account, such as users who have access. With Universal Analytics set to be discontinued this year, we’ll be showing data within Site Kit based on the connected GA4 property going forward, so users who already have access to that account will have a seamless switchover without permission errors.

Let me know if you have any further questions on this.
