• My site has been working fine up until at least a couple of weeks ago, but randomly checked the ‘register’ page on my site today and this page shows up saying “YOU HAVE BEEN LOCKED OUT.
    error”

There’s an image of a side eyed laptop looking that shows it’s stock from iThemes Security.

    Any idea what has happened?

(Also, if I’m logged into my admin account, the issue does NOT occur). Any advice??

  • There have been a couple of changes in the latest iTSec plugin releases that may affect this (lockouts and IP detection).

Not exactly sure what is happening. https://www.domain.com/register is usually not a default WP registration URL AFAIK. The default WP registration URL is https://www.domain.com/wp-login.url?action=register which seems to be working fine on your site.

The default “ERROR” msg (which can be customized) indicates a HOST (IP) lockout. Usually a HOST lockout is triggered by too many invalid login attempts or too many 404’s within a certain time period.

Is the iTSec plugin 404 Detection module enabled ?

Anyway, without any further information it’s hard to figure this out.
It could be a bug. It’s probably best to have a look at the iTSec plugin Logs page.

Ah, it seems it wasn’t about the WordPress register page after all.

I just noticed your link seems to be working fine now. Apparently resolved by doing a HTTP redirect (302) to a “subscription” page.

Thanks for sharing that solution with the community (not) ??

Heh – I haven’t had any time to bother trying to fix it… so if it is in fact fixed, then it resolved itself somehow… strange and great! Haha

If no changes were made to resolve the issue, chances are the issue will return in the future. Anyway this topic should be marked as Resolved for now.

Im having this same issue. Ive checked an article on iThemes about fixing 404 lockouts but we do not have any. I’ve had multiple customers tell us they have had the lock out screen pop up for no reason.

SO I’m seeing the laptop and eyes screen show up. It’s only when I’m on a specific wifi network. Located inside my hotel and casino.

I’m wondering if anyone can help

Lockouts stored in the DB table: wp_itsec_lockouts

So you need to run the following SQL query if using the free version, e.g:-

    “delete from wp_itsec_lockouts;”

    I need help!!
It was saying at the login page that my password was wrong. This is saved in keychain so it can’t be. After many attempts it locked me out.
Any time I try to reset the password it just sends me to the current home page of my website that says “website under maintenance”. This is what should be shown as the site isn’t live yet, but I cant even login to the admin panel to do anything. so I can’t reset the password at all or gain access???.

    Try:

    Help needed !
I am trying to access my work website https://angardstaffing.co.uk/
However i reveived the message (forbidden) you have been locked out. error
This occurred on both my iphone and laptop. Do you know how to fix this on iphone ?

You can temporarily disable ALL iTSec plugin modules by (properly) adding the line below to the wp-config.php file:

    define('ITSEC_DISABLE_MODULES', true);

This will probably allow you to access the default admin login page again.
Once logged in update the iTSec plugin to the latest release (7.7.1).

I would also advise to update WordPress to the latest release (either 5.3.4 or 5.4.2).

No guarantees this will actually resolve your issue, but what is the point of running an outdated security plugin on an outdated WordPress environment …
