wordfence is causing the error “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.” when I login to the dashboard with my admin account. If I delete the plugin the issue goes away. I can’t do anything while the plugin is installed.

    Any ideas what’s causing this?

I’m on a multisite installation and resaving users doesn’t seem to work. I also have no additional security plugins installed.

When are you resaving the user?

For me, I installed the new version of WF. It would produce the same error. When I added an underscore to the plugin folder name (ex. ‘_wordfence’), it deactivated WF. I added a new user. Saved my old admin account, changed WF back to the original folder name and reactivated and it seemed to work.

Not sure why but it worked.

On looking back, I never changed the plugin folder name, ‘_wordfence’. Changing it back to ‘wordfence’ produces the same previous error. Are there any downsides to having the ‘_’ in the name?

For what it’s worth, some of my sites I’ve been able to just hit Save from the newly created admin account. Other sites I’ve had to switch to Editor then back to Administrator. I can’t figure out the rhyme or reason.

Something strange I just noticed with this on my sites — not sure if anyone else can confirm. Is this only happening to User #1? I can’t find any other admin accounts that have been affected.

    I’ve got the same issue.
I can’t access the update section of the admin area and neither the network section (as asked in this thread).

It doesn’t work for me to just edit the admin account and hit save.

I have no user right management plugin installed and it’s a one language website.
The error happened when Wordfence was updated.

@flaxion — Create a new Administrator account and login as that. It should give you full access. If you want to access your old Administrator account, edit from the new one by changing it to Editor, hit Save, then change back to Administrator and hit Save. Your old account SHOULD have all of its user rights again.

I have similar (but not identical) permissions problems. They seemed to coincide with the update of Wordfence to 6.1.2. I do have the User Role Editor plugin but that was last updated 17 March and I haven’t seen any problems since then until now.

/wp-admin/options.php gives me a page of info headed “All Settings”.
/wp-admin/network/ gives me “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page”.

At the top of the dashboard I see the message “WordPress 4.5 is available! Please notify the site administrator” when I’m logged in with either of my Administrator accounts.

I can create a new user with Administrator role although none of the solutions here has worked for me.

Can I just confirm that when we’re talking about editing users here we’re referring to the “Edit User” screen, changing the Role (in some cases) then hitting “Update User”?

I do have Wordfence 6.0.25 installed on another site. To revert can I just copy the plugins/wordfence folder from that over the top of the same folder of the site with Wordfence 6.1.2?

    Any help appreciated – thanks!

@jim1001 — Yes, creating a new account has worked for me. The new account has all correct Administrator privileges. Editing the old administrator account (from the new one), changing its role to Editor, then back to Administrator, has worked to fix the old account.

We have a potential fix in 6.1.3 for this issue, released today.

We weren’t able to reproduce the issue on our own multisite installations yet, so there is still some difference I don’t know about, but a possible cause was found.

If anyone is comfortable with rolling back to an earlier version if necessary, can you try the latest version and let us know if the issue is resolved? Sorry for any difficulty, if you do need to roll back again.

This was not a multi-site problem for me. We have individual installations. Not every site reacted this way, and I couldn’t figure out a rhyme or reason to why some sites were affected and some weren’t.

The 6.1.3 fix worked for me.

    Matt R & all,

I deactivated Wordfence 6.1.2 and the dashboard returned to as expected for an Administrator role account.

I then installed 6.1.3 and all still looks fine.

/wp-admin/options.php still gives me a page of info headed “All Settings”.
/wp-admin/network/ now gives me “Multisite support is not enabled” which is true.

Thanks to all who posted and Wordfence for quick action.

    Hi

How do you upload a plugin if you do not have access to admin page?

    I used a plugin https://www.buddyboss.com/product/social-learner-learndash/

I used my main WordPress account the install a plugin with the intention keeping the site unpublished” and removing the live link from my website until I was happy with the functionalities of the software I had just paid almost $500 to test.

On completion of the install, the social-learner-learn dash (Buddy Boss) completely Hijacked my account; my login details were deleted, and I lost access to the admin portal. I was notified by a support that there was in “interruption” in the install and-and I should look at the document ” How To Recover A Hacked Website” charming….
I was not afforded the opportunity to unpublished the WordPress site and have been left unsupported and mocked by support for uploading the software on live site. In the first place.

‘We are not all Web developers Boss Buddy. It made perfect sense to me when you said not to use it on LIVE site, hence why I was going to make it UN-LIVE, but you took my admin away before could do so.

After spending $500 with this mob armed only with a Pdf and how to deal with hackers, I am now Seeking community support gurus for a work around to gain access to admin features of my WordPress site…please help
