My understanding is that Yoast automatically adds a trailing slash to the canonical for our blog homepage (FYI – we are using a posts page as the homepage).

However, it does not add the trailing slash to the xml sitemap that it generates. It’s not proper or effective SEO to submit URLS that redirect.

I was going to edit the Site or WordPress Address URLs to include the trailing slash, but WordPress’ own documentation reads, “Note: Both settings…should not have a slash “/” at the end.”

This inconsistency causes Google to exclude the non-slash page and generates errors in site audits (e.g. AHREFS).

How can I correct this Yoast error?

  • Hi @billferris,

These trailing slashes are controlled by WordPress settings. Can you please confirm if your site’s permalink settings in Settings -> Permalinks have the trailing slash at the end?

When you change the Permalink settings for WordPress to have no trailing slash, the Yoast sitemap will show no trailing slash for all URLs on the sitemap and vice versa. Can you confirm this on your end?

That’s true of the POSTS, but not the HOMEPAGE. In the permalink settings, POSTS do have the trailing slash.

All of the POST urls in the sitemap are correctly showing the trailing slash (same as the permalinks).

Only the HOMEPAGE url in the sitemap incorrectly omits the trailing slash.

I just want the sitemap to include the trailing slash for the homepage as well.
