Yoast slowing down WP admin load times
-
Hi, just wondering if anyone else is experiencing significant slowdown of the WP admin? I work in batches (writing then posting) and when I added new articles last Sept 6 I had no problems.
Today, it takes me anywhere from 2 minutes to 30 minutes to either load a add/edit post page or save draft/update.
I ended up deactivating all plugins and testing each one individually and Yoast was surprisingly the culprit. Both my sites are on sitground and I just updated yoast before I started working today. So, I don’t know if it’s only siteground or just me that’s actually affected.
Anyways, because I currently have no time I’ve resorted to deactivating yoast when editing articles and turning it on again when I log out. Obviously, the new articles don’t have any SEO information.
Just wanted to know if it’s just me or just siteground or anyone else so I can decide what to do.
Thanks.

Not only I’m experiencing a big slowdown, but I’m also experiencing my site being offline when I sometimes try to access wp-admin, and also:
yoast settings panel not accessible
This is my own topic: Site constantly Offline & SEO Optimization error message
Yes, there are problems.
I have, for example, an error from the WooCommerce plugin.
Everything was good for 5 years, but now there are problems.
It’s easier and safer for me to give up Yoast SEO and work with WooCommerce as it is.@arzoo
We apologize for the difficulties the plugin is causing for you. We can see this is a bit frustrating. We are happy to help. We would like some more information as this can help us troubleshoot and rule out or in possible issues.1. Can you confirm you are using WordPress 5.5.1? You can check by clicking on the W in the top left and selecting About. If you need to update, please check with your host provider. Please know that if you are using an older version of WordPress Core you may experience unexpected behavior with Yoast. This guide explains more: https://yoast.com/why-we-dont-support-old-wordpress-versions/.
2. Are all your non-Yoast plugins and themes also updated?
3. How many posts and pages do you have? A 100? 1000? Or are we talking about 10s of thousands of posts and taxonomy pages?
4. Can you confirm your server has all the right requirements? If you are not sure, speak to your host provider. This guide explains more: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/plugin-requirements/.
5. On a post or page which is slowing down, if you check for JavaScript errors do any appear on that page in the backend? Can you describe them or take a screenshot? If you are not sure how to look for JavaScript errors please use this guide https://yoast.com/help/how-to-find-javascript-errors-with-your-browsers-console/.
You can use a tool like: https://pasteboard.co/ to share the image.

Hi, thanks for the quick response. And, thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences too. I really appreciate it.
Anyways, I’ve done a little more monitoring and Yoast doesn’t seem to affect the site itself at much. For example with Yoast Pingdom shows 1.05 s (w/ is between 477 to 656 ms). GTmetrix is even with & without ranging between 1.1 to 1.3 on multiple tests for both.
So it seems more like a WP dashboard (admin) thing.
Anyways, here are the things you asked for.1.
My dashboard says Version 5.5.12. Are all your non-Yoast plugins and themes also updated?
Yes, I updated them all along with Yoast3. How many posts and pages do you have? A 100? 1000? Or are we talking about 10s of thousands of posts and taxonomy pages?
130 posts and 4 pages (the second site has just over 100 posts); both are experiencing the same slowdown issues4. Can you confirm your server has all the right requirements? If you are not sure, speak to your host provider. This guide explains more: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/plugin-requirements/.
The WordPress version of the website currently is 5.5, you can check that from Site Tools > WordPress > Autoupdate.
The PHP version which you currently have is 7.3, you can also check that from Site Tools > Devs > PHP manager.
The MySQL version is 5.7.
The cURL version is 7.66.0
The OpenSSL is 1.1.15.
There doesn’t look like there’s any errors. Please see attached screenshot. (oops there doesn’t seem to be any way to upload attachment here. Anyways the entire space under console came out blank) I’ve also asked my host and they’ve told me they don’t see any issues on their side.We are sorry to hear that you are having the slowness issue on your site backend while Yoast SEO active and it’s must be frustrating for you since everything seems correct on your system. So, we think the issue is specific to your site. We’d need to investigate further but are unable to do so on these forums. You can purchase Yoast SEO Premium and receive our Premium email support and we can help you further.
We also understand that you want us to resolve the issue for you before you may decide to take the premium. However, since we’ll need to take a look at the issue directly on your setup, it is mandatory that you have the premium support that comes with the premium subscription where we can privately investigate the issue further for you.

We have the very same problem on ALL sites using Yoast. The plugin slows down the editor even on very lightweight installations. See these screenshots of loading time from the web developer tools. The installation is new and uses only a few plugins and a very slim and fast theme. WP and all plugins are up-to-date. With Yoast running (all features enabled) loading time is almost tripled. Even with many features disabled it is still a significant increase. Rank Math, on the other hand, has much less impact on loading time:
Please note that this is a very light installation with around 10 plugins and less than 20 pages/posts. This is becoming more and more a nuisance.
@cutu234 We are sorry you’re having this issue. Per the forum guidelines, we ask that you please create a separate topic for the issue you are experiencing.

@cutu234 We are sorry you’re having this issue. Per the forum guidelines, we ask that you please create a separate topic for the issue you are experiencing.
Will do that. However, it’s really not an issue specific to one site only. I maintain 150+ customer sites, and all have the very same issue after Yoast was installed and activated. 90% of my customers use very basic features of the plugin. These features should not slow down the editor significantly. Check for yourself and compare to Rank Math, for example. But don’t use a 16-core high end machine for this. CPU can make make a huge difference.
@cutu234 Please share github issue here so we all can upvote it.
@cutu234, Thanks for getting back to us. We’d like to get more information about your sites, so we’ll be looking out for a new topic. You’re welcome to also refer to this issue there.
@alriksson, If you’re having a similar problem, we also encourage you to create a new forum topic with details about what’s happening on your site.
We track bug reports and feature requests using the Yoast SEO GitHub repo, so if we can help our developers identify where the problem is happening on your sites, you’ll be able to follow any issue’s progress on GitHub instead of in threads on these forums. Hope that helps to explain a bit more.
@priscillamc I don’t think we cna highlight a specific thing. You load heavy scripts in wp-admin. I think the besrt is to for once go through all assets loaded. Optimize them, and monitor what slows down with new relic where you can see. There is so many things form php to sql to assets (css and js) that you load that can be optimized so asking the users to pinpoint every small thing once we even get ignored in the gitbhub is not doable. Useers will just migrate to your competitors instead.
Wordpress communicty care about plugin developers who care about the feedback and the code. Yoast have not yet showed me that they care about any of this.
Alreasdy reported things in the github repo with ignore for months. All they did was closing the ticket without any comment. Once I asked why and for an explanation they continued ignoring the me. So I gave up giving feedback to the yoast dev team.
I agree with @alriksson. This is NOT a specific issue. ALL sites show the same problems. However, it is more dominant on sites that already use a bloated dashboard. If you run a lightweight site with, say, 15 plugins, 10 pages and no posts, you won’t have severe issues. On the other hand, a full-featured Woocommerce site using 35 Plugin, having 250 products will have a very slow dashbaord.
