When updating the Yoast SEO plugin I got a message telling that the update failed and there was a 500 internal server error. I had to report the issue to [email protected] but the mail bounced.
It was strange that after the update attempt the plugin was disappeared from the list of plugins. When I tried to reinstall it, the installer tells me that the folder already exists.
Can you help me? How do I reinstall the plugin without loosing my current settings?

@rsneller We’re sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties with the plugin, and we can certainly appreciate how frustrating that is.

If when trying to reinstall the plugin you received an error that the ‘destination folder already exists’ , that would indicate that something went wrong during the update which caused the plugin’s folder to become incomplete or damaged.

If you cannot reinstall the plugin in the standard fashion due to that error, as a workaround you can also perform a manual update of the plugin. We have instructions on how to upgrade the plugin manually at the following link: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp. You will need an FTP program such as FileZilla and your FTP details, which can be obtained from your host provider.

?Can you please try the aforementioned suggestions and let us know whether this resolves your issue?

    Hi Carl,
    Issue resolved! Thanks a lot.
One more question: do you know in which file(s) the Yoast SEO settings are saved?

@rsneller The settings for the Yoast SEO plugin are not stored in the plugin’s files. But rather they are stored within your site’s WordPress database.

However, you can export the plugin settings for Yoast SEO and then import them into another site for example. To export the settings, you would need to perform the following actions:

? In WordPress, go to SEO>Tools>Import and Export
? Click on the ‘Export Settings’ tab
? Click the ‘Export your Yoast SEO settings’ button

The plugin will then export your settings to copyable text. To then import these settings on the new site you would need to copy the settings and perform the following actions:

? In WordPress go to SEO>Tools>Import and Export
? Click on the ‘Import Settings’ tab
? Paste the settings you copied from the settings export
? Click the ‘Import Settings’ button

We also have additional information on the import/export functions of Yoast SEO at the following link: https://yoast.com/yoast-seo-import-export/
