Yoast isn't creating sitemaps

I looked on other posts, but the newest I found was from two years ago, and the problem involved the W3 total cache, which I don’t have installed.
Basically, the sitemaps aren’t being created, and when I click on the button to find my XML Sitemap, I get a 404. I have tried disabling, saving changes, enabling, saving changes. . .
And the funny thing is that I did have a sitemap.xml in the root directory that I created externally. Then I found the Yoast sitemaps and clicked the button and the yoast one showed up. I then googled more about it, decided I wanted the automatic Yoast one instead of the one I created, disabled yoast sitemaps, deleted my sitemap.xml, enabled yoast sitemaps, and it didn’t work.
