For months, I’ve had a functional image_sitemap.xml for my site, but when I checked Google Search Console recently, it appears that Google was getting a 404 on the file. Upon looking at Yoast’s settings, it appears that there is no image_sitemap at all. This sitemap used to have over a hundred indexed images, and now, none of the images on my website are being indexed at all. I am a painter, so it is very important that we index these images.

Is there any reason that Yoast wouldn’t be creating an image sitemap? We have images inserted into regular website content, blog posts, and our Envira gallery. We’re looking to switch to a new gallery, but I don’t know why Yoast wouldn’t pick up ANY of these images. It doesn’t look like robots.txt is preventing images from being crawled or anything like that, so I’m just super confused. Any help would be appreciated!

Some plugins, themes and page builder modules may not show images in the sitemap. If your pages have images you want included that aren’t you may need to add them via a filter: wpseo_sitemap_urlimages.

This filter will then register images to appear on the sitemap. If you are not sure how to use the filter you may wish to speak with your theme or plugin developer.

We have additional information on including images in the site located at the following link: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/images-in-the-xml-sitemap/
