Yoast Focus Keyword Not Working Properly

I have noticed over the last few months that the Yoast Focus Keyword is not calculating like it used to.

For example, if my focus keyword was:

“best wooden ladder”

in the past Yoast would count ONLY the occurrences of that exact keyword.

Now, Yoast seems to be counting even occurrences of the keyword not exactly matched.

Back to my example:

If my focus keyword is:

“best wooden ladder”

Yoast also counts:

“wooden ladder” and “ladder”

as part of the occurrences of my focus keyword.

The same thing is happening on alt tags.

If my focus keyword is:

“best wooden ladder”

Yoast is now counting alt tags that just have the keyword:

“ladder”

in at as an occurrence of my focus keyword.

Is it supposed to do this now?

This is expected behavior as Google will match the various parts. If you would like to use an exact match, please wrap the focus keyphrase is quotes.
