    Hello @akxak

I’m sorry about your experience. Kindly delete the plugin and re-install it.

Do let us know how it goes.

Same here: I updated a website (WordPress and plugins) after about a year. Website went offline (“white out”) and by debugging I found out that Yoast SEO Plugin was the root of the problem. After deactivating it, the website worked again. When I tried to re-activate Yoast plugin (which had always worked fine), WordPress tells me it cannot be activated because it causes a fatal error. On another website the update worked and the plugin is still working. What could be the reason or solution? Re-Installation? Means deleting and re-uploading the plugin files only? Will the database-part with all the settings and titles etc. still be there and connected after this process?

    Hi @wgwien

Can you kindly confirm if your site, where you are facing fatal error, meets the plugin requirements?

If yes, kindly follow the step to deactivate and delete the existing Yoast SEO and then reinstall and reactivate Yoast SEO.

You asked “Will the database-part with all the settings and titles etc. still be there and connected after this process?” The answer is yes. Yoast SEO stores SEO data and settings in the database, so reinstalling is not expected to cause any data loss.

We recommend creating regular backups of your site and database for your site’s health and safety. This is especially important before installing, updating, or removing plugins. It provides you with a safety net in case something were to go wrong. Learn more about the benefits of regular backups.

Also, updating a severely outdated plugin may cause unexpected issues. Thus, we highly recommend using a staging or testing site to reduce the impact on your live site. Some popular web hosts offer quick setups for a staging site, so please contact your web host for assistance. They will probably be able to help you out. If your web host does not offer staging sites, the WordPress plugin repository offers staging plugins, or you can create your own staging site.

Once you have backup, kindly follow the help article to uninstall and delete the existing Yoast SEO from your WordPress dashboard only and then download a fresh copy and reinstall Yoast SEO and then activate it.

    Dear @611shabnam ,

Thanks for your quick, helpful and in general interesting tips!

This one solved my update problem:

Deleting and re-installing the plugin (as you had suggested).

Before I had checked the minimum requirements and php version, but this obviously wasn’t the problem.

No idea why the normal update had failed, but the re-installed version works perfectly again and seemingly no data was lost.

Btw, I deleted and re-installed via the WordPress-Backend, not via ftp (in case that other users are intersted in this info).

Thanks again and have a nice day!
