Hi. I just downloaded, installed and have the Apache & mysql services running on my box but even though I am looking at the ID & PW in the WinMySQLadmin .ini file (that came with XAMPP), those are not working for me when trying to login to phpMyAdmin as discussed 3/4’s of the way down this page:
    https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/xampp/.

I have been to their homesite (https://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php) as well as to Sourceforge for questions but have never heard back from either one of them. Surely there is an easy way to get into phpMyAdmin that I’m just not aware of, can someone help me out here? TIA.

Oh yeah, I haven’t heard back from the XAMPP people either so 3 strikes, I’m out lol.

It always helps to start the XAMPP service lol.

At least I just now noticed it, but it won’t start for me (using fresh install), even though it is set for Auto start. Manually gives the eventlog error below when trying to run the service under my local account (I am the administrator):

“The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( XAMPP ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: XAMPP Service Error: 32, The XAMPP Service cannot start because the XAMPP Application is running..”

It won’t run under system control either. The apache2, mysql & ftp services are running fine and I haven’t changed any of the defaults (that I am aware of), any ideas? TIA.

EDIT: please don’t say “go to their forum” because it won’t let me login, saying my email address is taken, even though I’m not blocking their cookie and have never been able to login or get confirmation when registering there

If the local copy of WordPress (or anything for that matter) can go thru XAMPP to the web, what URL do you go to to access it? With the whole purpose being to not use an ISP, I don’t understand how the site gets accessed.

If it’s just for a local copy to edit code with (to save bandwidth), I can understand that.

Assuming I ever get the XAMPP service to say “running” in the Windows Service list (which seems necessary for anything to happen), where is the site going to? TIA.

The XAMPP service isn’t ever going to show in the Services list, because there isn’t an XAMPP service. You should see apache and mysql in the Services list….

    (@billyg)

sorry, it is the last service in my list and I see the error above everytime I try to start it…

    here’s the service panel:

    https://billy-girlardo.com/images/xamppservice.jpg

but more importantly, where is anything going once it leaves my machine thru XAMPP?

Well, I don’t have the latest version yet, but I’ve never ever had an “xampp” service and I’ve been using it for years. Do you have apache and mysql listed? Did you use the apache_installservice.bat and mysql_installservice.bat files in the apache and mysql folders? Well, you must have if those are running fine.

Thing is, once apache is running, THAT’S the local server. That’s all you need. Mysql is for the databases mostly….

    (@billyg)

yes, those services are running fine

I just downloaded XAMPP this morning.

I’m trying this route again because I want to get away from an ISP bad.

Latest reason: I just installed a plugin and it corrupted my technorati tags on every post (I made no techno changes!)

So, since there are so few posts, this time around, I can delete and start over, or get this XAMPP thing settled once and for all.

If it won’t work, fine, if it does, where does my site get sent to? This last sentence settles everything for me. TIA.

Hope flammobammo can help you with that one, BillyG. I haven’t a clue how that works.

What I DO know is that running something on your home machine that’s accessible from the ‘net is not necessarily either a good idea or for the faint of heart. And while I don’t have any idea where you should start, I do know you’d better have some serious security in place.

right, there are precautions to take and I still don’t see how this isn’t done already by someone out there (especially based on earlier comments) but I’m gonna stop elongating this thread and see if anyone every posts a workaround (I never did hear from flammo) and I still can’t get an answer for my registration from the XAMPP people over the pond so I’m DIW on this front lol, peace V.

Best of luck…. if you DO get it sorted, how about a mini-tutorial on your site so the next poor guy can be referred there for clues?

np, I’ll definitely post back here also

talking to someone the other day, he said I might need to call my registar and then get in touch with my present host and have my domain relinuished from them to my ip but since that changes, or if/when I move in the future, at which point it will definitely change (although I see that Seth Godin’s site is an IP address)…. blah blah, it could get messy, worth it? I don’t know, still sorting junk out, always learning, later.

hahah wooops I forgot about this post and never checked back. I’ll email BillyG and perhaps write a mini-tutorial for setting up a WordPress blog using XAMPP from a computer.

If anyone ever reads this and wants to find this tutorial that I haven’t written yet, keep an eye on https://tombammann.org

    Cheers,
    Tom
