• Hey guys,

Ive got xampp installed and configured, wordpress installed and configured, .com registered. DNS hosting and nameservers changed, and ports forwarded. I’m trying to host my own site, but its only viewable in the most basic format, like an index table. But on my PC (in my network) it looks fine. Im so stuck…. I dont know where to begin!

Any help would be so amazing!

    Thanks,

Im guessing it has something to do with the index file in htdocs folder. Ive messed around with it a bit… instead of having the wordpress folder in htdocs (htdocs>wordpress>*files*) I placed all files from the wordpress folder directly into htdocs (htdocs>*files*).

Would it matter that my site is only a fresh theme right now? I have not added anything to it. I figured it would just show the theme and default content.

just want to make sure that, in general settings, you used the domain, and not localhost?

Also, take a look at this tutorial and see if it helps.

I’ve just found something similar to what your describing… Changing the database from https://localhost to siteURL? Im assuming that is what needs to happen… I’ll give it a shot!

    Thanks for helping!

yeah, you can’t have localhost in the url settings…. every computer thinks it is localhost…. so they look at themselves for your files (css, etc)

    Ok, I did the following:

    localhost>phpmyadmin>*database*>wp_options

Then added the URL into the text box, refreshed the server and now I get an error “Could not establish a connection to the database”

    What did I mess up?

umm…. not sure what you are changing in wp_options. The only url to change would be site url and wordpress url, which is IN wp-options.

They could more easily be checked/changed in your admin section too, general settings, as I mentioned above

Your database location can be localhost, as that is true, your database is on your machine. Its just the wordpress settings URLs cannot be localhost

Rev. Voodoo please forgive the following noobness:

Can you tell me how to get to my general settings?
    Is in under the phpmyadmin?
Im at a total loss… this is the guide Ive been following:

    https://thethemefoundry.com/blog/xampp-wordpress/

Again, thank you for your patience and help.
    Its greatly appreciated!

it’s in wordpress….you log in to your admin panel and go to settings->general

If you can’t log in to your backend, then you can make the changes in phpmyadmin

    Ok, I did the following:

    localhost>phpmyadmin>*database*>wp_options

Then added the URL into the text box

Although, I am a little worried about this? I’m not sure exactly what you did….. did you change one of the options in wp_options? or did you just add something, or what?

    Rev. Voodoo,

I just changed an option, and have since deleted it.

I’ve uninstalled xampp and WP and started form scratch to see if I can get my site live.

So far, Ive done the following:

htdocs – deleted the xampp folder and index files

Installed wordpress files directly to htdocs (htdocs>*wpfiles* instead of htcocs>wordpress>*files*)

On the WP dashboard I changed:
WordPress address (URL) to my website URL
Site address (URL)to my website URL

My port 80 is open, my nameservers are updated…

And I still cant make it work.

And I’m sure its something so simple!

so you get to your site, but no styling, correct?

When you view source from within the browser, how do urls look?

Like near the top of source you would see a link to your stylesheet, how does it look?

does it point to http: / /domain.com/wp-content/themes/themename/style.css

I dont know how, but I got it working….

I think just starting fresh really helped.
I really appreciate your time! You helped tremendously!

I will keep this updated if I run into anymore problems.

    Thanks again, you’re awesome!

    Nice! Good job!
