Prior search unearthed earlier posts with same problem, i.e. the final instruction of following tamba2.org’s guide to installing xampp and wordpress is to enter:

    https://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php

    which results in the response:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in C:\xampplite\htdocs\wordpress\wp-config.php on line 24

    Has anyone satisfactorily resolved this?

Resolved. I deleted the existing wp-config.php, then opened the original wp-config-sample.php, and created wp-config.php over again.

Then, I CUT all the text from wp-config.php, saved, and deleted. Next, opened a NEW file in Notepad, PASTED the CUT text into that, and saved as wp-config.php

Success! But why? The two versions of config-php are identical in screenprints. Having almost zero knowledge of coding and anything related, I can only assume there was something there (‘whitespace’?) which was invisble to the eye but not to the system.

You may have had the same issue I was having which I just solved after pulling my hair for some time. Following the guide, I entered ” (one double quote mark) for password (i.e. no password) when it should be ” (two single quote marks). Perhaps you entered it wrong the first time and fixed it on your second try. Hope this helps others with the same problem.
