First time post here, thought this was an issue with the theme but they’ve led me to believe it’s my WP install.

It sounds crazy, but my WP will not show me previous pages of posts. So, for example, on https://www.sitename.com, I click on prev page button at the bottom of the page – URL says https://www.sitename.com/page/2 – and it returns me to the plain URL, showing me the most recent posts, not previous ones. This happens for page 2, 3, etc. – any “page” URL returns me to the primary URL and most recent posts.

I’ve tried manually typing in the URL, and I’ve tried mistyping the URL. Manually typing gives me the same result and mistyping gives me my 404 page, as expected.

I can access previous posts by using the date structure, but not using the “page” URL. Since this is URL handling, I thought of Permalinks; it’s set to Day and Name so https://www.sitename.com/2016/01/22 shows me the posts from the 22nd, for example.

I am the primary maintainer of this site, but it’s possible some other admin did something, or that I’ve somehow mucked it up.

    Please help!

  • Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Fifteen theme with all plugins deactivated?

Good question. This is a live website with hundreds-thousands of users 24-7, so I can’t just do that immediately.

I was hoping that someone would have some insight as I will have to schedule this, and rather than make lots of extra work for me, and affect many users, someone might have the answer.

This has been a problem since 4.4 came out, but I’ve determined that it didn’t self-heal with 4.4.1 as I had been expecting, and the theme makers’ advice has so far been unhelpful (upgrade to the latest version, which I have done twice as new versions were released).

Oh, and if it helps, we did enable SSL around that same time.

I’m sorry but there is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just basic troubleshooting – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.

I’ll try to schedule some downtime for the site and will report back to you; it might be a few days.

I meant to get back sooner, but it was an issue with the theme and some parameters causing bizarre behavior.

    Thanks for the help
