I didn’t set up this multisite (although, right now there is only one up and running), and I am no expert at wordpress, and haven’t really dealt with multisites before.
Updating files and content is more my thing.

My issue is when you go to https://www.sample.com, it goes to a blank page, or one with symbols on it (depending on the browser) and a file goes to download. There is no issue when you go to sample.com. Reading through different answers, it looks like it should just re-direct to sample.com
As I don’t usually type in www. and took it over not that long ago, I don’t know if this has always been like that, or if it’s a more recent issue.

Can I just add in www. to the domain in Network Admin > Sites?
Is there other places I need to change it as well?

You may try to check the IP address of the sample.com and https://www.sample.com. Maybe they have different IP addresses. If this would be the case, please contact your hosting provider to let them help you in updating the IP address of https://www.sample.com same as sample.com. Hope this will help.
