• from time to time readers find the information of someone else pre-populated in the name and email address fields when they want to post a comment

  • That’s strange. Are you sure it doesn’t come from their navigator’s cache ? How did you find out about this problem ?

Do you mean that the form fields are pre-populating? This isn’t something WordPress normally does, and would likely be the browser filling it out based on the user’s address book or previous submissions.

Or do you mean that it is appearing as if they are logged in as another user?

If so, are you using any type of caching plugin (WP Super Cache, WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache etc.)? These plugins should have a setting to disable for logged in users. This way it won’t cache versions of pages that display a logged in user’s details.

to pannesinfo: several readers have told me about this and one called to say that a comment posted with his name was not from him

jacob: your question is interesting … they’ve only told me that when they view a post and navigate to the comment submission section at the bottom there is another’s name and email address already there.

I am not currently using any type of caching plugin

It sounds like your users might just be getting confused by their browser’s autocomplete functionality.

I suggest asking for a screenshot next time it comes up. If it’s just the form fields filled out, and the fields might have turned yellow, then that’s probably what’s happening.

If you have control of your theme, or use a Child Theme, you could pass extra arguments to comment_form() to add an attribute to disable autocomplete.

I’ll ask for a screen shot … programming is beyond my basic means

It’s not any of the suggestions. My site does the same thing, on all browsers, and I’ve been through the wringer trying to solve it — “tell your users to clear their cache” isn’t an acceptable solution. IF ONLY WORDPRESS HAD ACTUAL SUPPORT.

A browser’s auto-complete won’t put in stuff from other users; it remembers what that use entered in similarly named fields. So… you say you’re not using any caching plugins. What about your host? What is your site’s URL?
