  • sevago, short URL’s has been broken since Jetpack silently pushed out new updates on their backend the other day.

This was mentioned in another thread along with other issues and concerns which you can read here:

oh thank you, let me read that then

no my problem is something else.. the publicize feature add automatically the default url next to the title instead of the custom short URL i started to use few days ago.

I think you missed what I tried to say here. I, too, use short links (wp.me) but since introduction of changes on the backend of Publicize, ALL shortlinks are no longer working, and instead the full links are being used.

?? so sad .. hope they solve this soon

Likewise! Hopefully our persistent presence in these forums will help out!

I have been talking with someone on their support team and I don’t think they plan on ‘fixing’ this ??

    Here’s the reason they gave:

Publicize now will only share the Full URLs for your posts, and not use any link shorteners. This is because URLs do not count toward the limits in tweets or other social networks, we’ve decided to start sharing Full URLs.

Is there a way to bypass this?

and that’s the reason why i decided to move to SNAP plugin.. at least i manually add my desirable link in the text box.

@mitchellalerts is correct, that change was part of some changes we’ve made to Publicize last week. Several of our users wanted to share full URLs instead of short links when working with Publicize. Twitter also started shortening all links, even shortlinks, so sending long links to Twitter wasn’t a problem anymore.

That’s why we switched Publicize from using shortlinks to using long URLs.

We’re continuously working on Publicize improvements, though, and we plan on adding more options to control the Publicize messages in the future. You can follow our progress here:
    https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/261

I added your suggestion to the issue, and we’ll try to include options to customize the shared URL as well.

In the meantime, as @sevago mentioned, you could try another Sharing plugin, like SNAP:

“Several of our users wanted to share full URLs instead of short links when working with Publicize.”

We use bit.ly to shorten links from a handful of sites and monitor link activity for everything through that account. In conjunction, Publicize and WP Bit.ly made a perfect pairing. Everything on the blogs posted automatically to social networks, and we were able to post content from other non-blog sites using our shortlinks, maintaining a uniform look in our feed. It was a nice setup.

If Publicize really plans to use only full URLs moving forward, I’ll be switching to SNAP too, I guess.

@evilmammoth: Thanks for the feedback! I’d recommend following along with the discussion on the issue that Jeremy linked to above. And as mentioned, you can use another plugin to see if that will work better for you.
