Wrong Card Holders Charged for repeat subscriptions

I understand this must be frustrating and confusing. To get a better understanding of the situation, has the user whose card was charged contacted you? If not, could you reach out to the customer to confirm whether they might be using their card multiple times on different accounts?

I’m not sure what service or product you offer, but it could be the same user using their card to gift subscriptions to friends or family on a new account. Please contact the customer and let me know their response.

Thanks for getting back to me, no the users are completely different and not linked at all, none using gift card vouchers. If you look at the uploaded image this is from the stripe account and you will see that the same order number has been charged to multiple cards. ie. order 17637 has been charged to both card ending 8438 and ending 6312

Unfortunately even the latest version of the plugin is also causing issues of wrong users being charged as you can see from the screenshot from transactions this afternoon the user has been charged for a subscription which was paid on 10/1/2025 and now it has been added again today to be charged for again but somebody else.

Thank you for getting back and sharing the screenshot. Based on what you’ve shared, there’s no clear indication that the charge was made on someone else’s card.

From the first screenshot, it appears that most of the double charges are from the same user. The initial transaction likely failed or was left incomplete, and the user retried, successfully completing the payment. This doesn’t suggest that another user was charged for someone else’s order—it’s the same user being charged for a previous failed or attempted order.

In other cases, it seems the user might have subscribed twice for the same product or service. This also doesn’t imply that one user’s card was used for someone else’s order.

Regarding the last screenshot, it looks like a double charge from the same user on January 13, as both transactions show the same email address.

If you believe otherwise, kindly share a screenshot of the order details for two of the duplicate transactions, along with a link to your site, so I can better understand the product or service you offer.

You are misunderstanding the screenshots, these are both screenshots from Stripe, in screenshot 1 if you look down the description column this has the order id in as you will see the same order id is in multiple charges but with different card number (payment method) ie. the bottom transaction with an order id of 17637 this was paid by a card ending in 8438 – which is registered in woocommerce as well however later in the day that same order id was again charged to a different card ending in 6312. This wasn’t registered in woocommerce except in the stripe logs and it clearly states that the payment was charged to a different user. These are subscriptions which the users pay once a year and no other payments are made so it is not the users purchasing something different they are payments being double charged to different users. The second screenshot shows the same email address being charged within 2 hours of each other but again for 2 different order ids, the second order id being an order placed and paid for by the correct subscriber on 10th January as you can see in screenshot 1 the fifth from the bottom order id 17642.

You have asked me to provide screenshots of two duplicate transactions which I have so I am not sure what you are asking, I can’t share within woocommerce as it doesn’t show duplicate transactions only in Stripe does it show that the same order has been charged twice (and the customers who have been charged twice having this double charge). The website is https://azevn.org/ and it is the subscription to become a member but we have paused the new memberships for the time being.

Speaking to Stripe support yesterday evening they have said
While I understand that you’ve encountered an issue with duplicate order numbers for different customers, after careful review, I’m afraid this isn’t a bug on Stripe’s end. Rather, it’s an issue with your third party integration with WooCommerce.?
They may need to check their integration on how the payment intent was processed and have them update the description of the order.?
If, after speaking with the plugin developer, they determine that our involvement is necessary, we kindly request that they reach out to us directly on your behalf, quoting the ticket number #19209420. This approach ensures we can collaborate effectively to resolve your issue if needed.?

Specifically, how the subscription feature is configured on your site.

Could you please send me a copy of your site’s System Status Report?
You can find it via WooCommerce > Status.
Select Get system report and then Copy for support.
Then paste it here in a Code block.

Lastly, could you edit the affected orders in WooCommerce and share screenshots of the Order Notes?
This will help me check what events took place at the backend.

Here are the order notes for the orders in the above screenshot but as mentioned before within woocommerce it doesn’t show the double payment only in stripe and the order logs for stripe

You will see that order 17642 was completed by a different user on the 10/01/25 but recharged again to a different user on the 13/01/2025.

We have downgraded the stripe plugin to V9.0.0 to see if any duplicate charges occur again – so far 2h and 30 minutes since last renewal and no second charge has happened yet but we are monitoring to make sure.

Thank you – since downgrading to version 9.0.0 unfortunately the same issue has happened – only orders from 10/1/25 though are being recharged to new order customers. So really do not understand what is happening. In the stripe logs I keep seeing this
