    Hello,

We previously raised this question/error with you on the WordPress forum. However, we feel that we were not given adequate assistance.
That’s why I’m trying to contact you again within a new post, as I believe this feedback could be important for you. There may be other websites experiencing the same issue that you may be able to resolve in the short
    term.

For years, we have used the Yoast plugin for over 10 websites. However, during an SEO audit, a
specialist informed us that the subsequent pages of our blog pages or archives all had a canonical URL linking back to the first page of the blog. This means that /page/2, /page/3, etc. are not indexed by Google.
As a result, the whole structure of our websites is not properly set up and there are orphaned pages.

Your staff’s advice was for us to test whether the issue was caused by the Yoast plugin or whether it conflicted with a theme or other plugin.
I tested it by switching to the default twenty-two theme and disabling all plugins. The second archive page then had a self-referencing canonical URL. I then re-enabled only the Yoast plugin and checked again. However, the canonical URL still referred to the first archive page. In my opinion, the issue is not caused by a conflict with the theme or other plugin, but by the Yoast plugin itself.

Another SEO plugin (All in One SEO) has an option to refer the canonical URL of paginated pages back to itself. It would be great if Yoast could provide this feature as well. Currently, it’s not working properly. I would like to keep using the Yoast plugin, but this issue needs to be resolved, not just for me, but also for everyone else who uses pagination.

When I raised this with your staff member on the forum, I was told that I had to subscribe to a paid plan to receive further assistance. I find this strange because I’m also helping to improve the functionality of
    your plugin, right?

Are there any other ways to fix this error?

    Best regards,
    Amy

We’re sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. We understand you are having issues with the wrong canonical URL on the pagination pages.

To clarify, paginated archives or pages are supposed to self-reference themselves. If it has relations, it should append?prev?and?next.?This is a google expectation and normal. You can read more about it here:?https://yoast.com/pagination-seo-best-practices/.

Our plugin utilizes the built-in WordPress core functions to recognize pagination. Some plugins and theme developers have modified or created their own method of adding pagination. In these cases, custom code may need to be written by a developer to pass information between our plugin and the plugin or theme creating the pagination. If so, please reach out to the developer of the plugin or theme in question to request information on being compatible with our plugin.

If you could show us some example URLs where the issue occurs, we would inspect them and verify the output.

The wpseo_prev_rel_link and wpseo_next_rel_link filters can be used to customize the output or return false to disable the output. Some examples can be found here. You can learn more about it here – https://yoast.com/help/is-the-plugin-compatible-with-paginated-content/

    Hello Suwash,

Thanks for your reply. The problem appears on all websites I have where I ure the Yoast plugin. As said, I have disabled the current theme and alle of the plugins, then turned on only the Yoast plugin and the canonical pagination goes wrong. So it cannot be a conflict between our theme/plugins and the Yoast plugin.

    Hello @amyflp,

Sadly, we are out of clues at this point and can’t confirm anything without taking a deeper look, as mentioned already.

    @maybellyne
Have you read the comment of your collegua Suwash? Almost a month ago he asked me an example of the website / page where the problem occurs. He said you would investigate the problem.
    What did you found?

You are making it way too easy for yourselves. This problem only exists with your plugin and not with your biggest competitor’s plugin. They have a solution for it. Because I’ve been using Yoast for years, it’s not ideal to switch to another plugin. But I find it extremely remarkable that you don’t make an effort to identify the problem and offer a solution. Remarkably bad, that is.

You first asked for an example of one of my websites. I provided the website, then I heard nothing for weeks and had to ask for an update three times. The response I received was that you simply don’t know. Is it now on your list to investigate further? I see enough forum posts online from people who have exactly the same problem, but you’re not doing anything about it. This means that SEO doesn’t work properly on paginated pages.

Just for clarification, the above bug report describes a problem with canonical and prev/next tags on paginated series created using the Elementor Posts or Loop Grid elements. @amyflp If you’ve created your paginated archives differently, please elaborate on how you’ve created them so we can investigate further. Thanks!

Hi Monbauza, Indeed I use Elementor Posts for the paginated pages.

    Thanks for investigating.

    Hello,
On one of my websites where the problem also occurs I use WP Bakery for paginated posts pages. Not Elementor.

    Hi,
Are there any updates about this problem?

We’ve also experienced this on our Divi websites with blogs and have been using Yoast SEO plugin for years on all our websites as well. I would also be interested in learning what the status of this issue is.
    Thanks!
