    Hi,

We’ve recently noticed that there are some /us/ URLs appearing in our Yoast generated sitemap, when you try to navigate to them, the page 404’s. After some digging around, it appears that these URLs are the default language set in WPML. However, by setting the default language in WPML, it removes the language from the URL.

So, where https://www.example.com/us/ is the homepage, it would become just https://www.example.com

However, it appears that Yoast is still adding the original URL to the sitemap as well. This isn’t happening for every page, only certain ones, but it’s causing some issues in our Google Search console.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas how to resolve?

    Hi @promjoe,

Did you install and activate the Yoast SEO Multilingual plugin? It is developed by the theme at WPML If not, please do so and let us know if the issue persists.

We are looking forward to your reply.

    Hi Marius,

Thanks for the reply and suggestion, I’ve just tried this but I can still see the /us/ URLs in the sitemap.

A little more information for you – It appears that this is only happening for a few select pages, there doesn’t look to be any pattern and it’s just random.

    Thanks,
    Joe

As it happens for select pages, what makes these pages different than other pages on your site? Some things that we’ve seen (regardless of WPML) that can cause unexpected URLs in the sitemap is having a custom canonical. Are there any pages that do not appear in the sitemap? If so, do these missing pages have a custom canonical? Does the non-US translated page have a custom canonical?

If you do not feel comfortable to do this yourself or if this does not solve your issue, our Yoast SEO Premium plugin comes with one year of (technical) support.

Thanks, I can’t see anything that would differentiate those pages from any other page on our site. They’re just run of the mill pages. I will get in touch with technical support now.

    Thanks!
