wp_insert_post and wp_update_post are slow

I am getting almost 1000 records through a JSON call. I want to update/insert the data as wordpress post. But the wp_insert_post and wp_update_post are very slow. Whole process is taking almost 30 minutes.

Is there any better way to import large amount of data as wordpress posts?
