We just updated to WP5.0 and the text editor option has disappeared from post/page edits. We used to be able to choose visual or text editing but that option does not appear. Instead there is some talk about “blocks” with no explanation of what they are.
Some of our work depends on being able to enter HTML in text edit mode. Please tell me how to get access to that in WP5.0 !

  • Install the “Classic Editor” plugin, and activate it. That should put things back the way they were.

It’s still there! You don’t need the Classic Editor plugin for that.

If you need to add HTML, there is a Custom HTML block in the Formatting section.

If you need to edit as text the way you used to, you click the ellipsis (Show More Tools and Options) at the top-right of the screen to the right of the gear icon, then click Code Editor, or you can use Ctrl+Shift+Alt+m.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just discovered the “additional options” myself. Can you still call the three dots an ellipsis if they are vertical?

Next problem. The Add Media link has disappeared from the both the text and visual editor windows. The Visual editor has a small icon that apparently does the same thing but I can’t find a similar action on the code/editor window. Having to flick back and forth from code to visual editor is inconvenient. It is very inconsiderate of WP to remove options or make them more difficult to access when they update?

Very good question. I have no clue. You knew what I meant, though, didn’t you?

As far as I know, the Add Media button has been replaced in the Visual Editor by the Image, Audio, File, Video, and a whole slew of Embeds (in the Embeds section) of the Visual Editor. I don’t believe the Code Editor is designed for anything by writing code directly. I believe Gutenberg is built to use the Visual Editor. I’ve been using it for a while now, and I rarely have to use the Code Editor. The only times are when I’ve used the Convert to Blocks option to convert Classic Blocks to the new Gutenberg Blocks and some of the code I had entered had to be removed. If you need raw HTML in there, you can use a Custom HTML block, no Code Editor required.

Now that I’ve been using it for a while, I really prefer Gutenberg. It just takes a little getting used to, and I’m looking forward to the point where not every block has to be top-level.

I sill would like an Add Media button on the code/text editor. If they can put one on the visual editor they could put one on the text editor just as easily. Taking away a useful option is not progress.

When trying to add a post, the Post Editor has disappeared entirely. All I get is the Title field and content blocks field. What has happened? Please help.
