WP4 upgrade took down a site

Currently showing a one word “error” message on all pages.

I just upgraded a site that had been getting a lot of hacking attempts. I had installed a security plugin and done some work with it including mod’ing the login page so that it was a unique location. For some reason I the configuration I did may be what is causing the issue.

I have backups, working to restore now. Would prefer to fix.. just wondering if anyone has run into this?

plugins that may relate to post: backupwordpress, better-wp-security

edit: yes! removing the security plugin + reverting the htaccess file did it!
