• Ok I’ve been hosting our WP at BlueHost for the last couple of years and I have been quite happy. But I have a sudden urge to host this on our server to tinker with it more. I’ve tried this, before going to a third party host, and I ran into a ton of problems. I’ve downloaded the required programs.

Well before I start I’m just curious if there is anything I need to know that may be unique to the current installation. I know the above link refrerences WP 2.1 instead of the current WP 2.2.3 so I wanted to make sure.

Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

there were no changes in requirements from 2.1 to 2.2, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

What sort of operating system are you running on your computer? Most linux distributions have automated means of installing the software without you downloading it. If you’re on windows, i would suggest using XAMPP.

It’s generally somewhat risky to run your own server, since if your blog gets hacked, they’ll be hacking their way onto your local network. I wouldn’t advise running your blog that way unless you have a good handle on hardening your router, and your server. My only reason for saying this is that if you’re asking how to install this stuff, it would seem that hardening PHP and MySQL would be a ways off.

You’re right sunburnkamel I am no well versed in locking down our server. I guess I should have rephrased my question better. I do plan on still hosting it through Bluehost but I wanted to install (maybe “host” was not a good choice of word) wordpress on our server so that we could have a duplicate installation and I can tinker with the site without having to mess up my main hosted installation.

Thanks to the reference to XAMPP that should help out alot. So I take it from there it should be pretty straight forward?

yup, XAMPP is very easy to install and set up.
