WP workflow with text editor – real and test environment?

Hi everyone!
I have successfully installed WordPress on my domain, have accessed it via FTP (Filezilla) to edit it with a text editor (child themes) and everything works so far. Now as a newbie I have he following question:
I dont want to try new designs and functionalities directly in my live environment, therefore I thought about a localhost installation redundant to my live site to first try new things there and test them before uploading it to my live site – does his make sense? Are there others who do it similar? Or is there a better – “more usual” way to do this? (I would really be very grateful for a hint here – also if there is this kind of information or examples of workflows like this anywhere where I can look them up)!Thank you very much!
