WP vs. building your own from scratch?

    I need some expert thoughts here and hope you guys can help.

    So, I am project manager for a large scale project coming up. For this project we need a stable, strong and flexible CMS system. We will make something a bit like Squarespace, Moonfruit, etc, but different – Unfortunately, I can’t go any more into details because of my obligation of secrecy.

    We are thinking of using wordpress multisite for this project as the underlying machine, but my worries are weather to go for the WordPress solution or build a new CMS system from scratch.

    I would love to use WP for this project and I would therefore like to hear some pro and cons for using WP vs. building your own CMS system for a project like this. I need arguments for the WP solution ??

    I need some experts on WP to comment on this one – What are your thoughts on this?

  • Your question makes no sense. Building a new CMS from scratch is obviously going to be more costly and less robust than WordPress. If you genuinely have worries, what exactly are they?

    Well, I am worried if our modifications on wordpress (not core) will be too big and therefore the updates too big an issue?

    Do you know if other big CMS companies (Squarespace, shopify, moonfruit, etc) have build there systems upon an existing CMS system like WP?

    I don’t understand what you mean by “too big”. Do you mean that you will have to make many modifications? I don’t understand why that is a problem.

    It is true that you will have to test future versions of WordPress before applying updates to your site, but testing an occasional upgrade is less work than maintaining all the code for an entire CMS.

    I work with Enterprise level publishing and broadcast companies that run their entire web presence on WordPress. Of course you will be developing highly modified themes and plugins but it is going to be more robust and feature complete than creating your own CMS. WordPress enables large scale websites to be rapidly developed and large companies are catching on and leveraging this to their advantage.

    Many of these companies switched to WordPress from proprietary CMS systems and spent time and resources evaluating the best solution.
