wp-super-cache (removed) posts showing 404

I don’t know what happened, but I had to change the permalink structure back to default then back to my custom structure.

Tim: I’m so glad I saw your post, and that you were gracious enough to follow it up with a solution. I don’t know how I’d have resolved my problem without seeing your posts.

I installed wp-super-cache, having previously set my permalinks to “day and name”. After properly configuring the plugin and modifying the htaccess files, I found that attempting to visit any page on my site except the front page generated a 404 error.

So I switched my permalink structure to default and then back to “day and name,” and the problem resolved.

Could it be that wp-super-cache, once installed, will always generate 404s on any site with non-default permalinks, until this back and fourth permalinks reset trick is performed? If so, this seems like something that should be documented, if a bug fix can’t be made.

Donncha: Please add this to the uninstall procedure or add it as a note. Uninstalling the plugin may cause 404 errors on all pages except the home page. Turning off custom permalinks resolves this issue.

I’ve never seen this myself. I can only presume that the WordPress mod_rewrite rules were somehow removed when you uninstalled the plugin.

Did you delete the .htaccess file or edit it when uninstalling?

I had the same problem show up, with no reason that I could identify. Only the ‘Home’ page would show. All other pages began showing ‘404 errors’.

After reading this post, I simply changed the permalink structure to default, and then back to “day and name” without even saving the change. Problem solved!

Thanks for your documenting this. I have spent hours trying to figure out what happened to create this, to no avail. All is well now, except I wonder what created this error in the first place.
