I’m looking for something that would automatically use a category (of a single site) in the subdomain of the post url.

So that the post permalinks would be:

https://category-slug-1.site.com/slug/ if i pick category1 on site.com
https://category-slug-2.site.com/slug/ if i pick category2 on site.com

But on the same site, not multiple. And that site is inside of a network of other sites.

Right now it’s looking like I need to create a new site for each category that I want to use, so that makes x admin dashboards for x categories.

yes, each category site would have its own admin area.

yes, multisite will do it with multiple networks. One multisite is one network.

Are the “broken” comments about this plugin because they used it on a MU installation?

Does it still work with the latest single WP?… or at least 3.0?

I think it’s the solution for my project, rather than a MU installation, since I want to keep pages and posts in a single place, to be edited once, rather than the same page in each sub-site -although they will show as duplicated pages in each domain.

No, what you want is completely different, The plugin mentioned above is for multsite, NOT mu.

And it would not do what you wanted anyway.

Multisite is *multiple sites*. You want multiple domains showing one site. Not the same.

I don’t care if there’s a multisite installation or not. I just want to mark a page as “atlanta” category, and it to be mapped to the “atlanta.com” site, without having to edit the same page under each sub-wordpress (I don’t know how to call each blip inside a multisite wp… perhaps “site”? )

By doing so, I could tag/categorize the same page for several regional websites.
I just want to edit one page, and it to be shown in all the domains.

I have edited someone else’s wordpress sites before, and for me to edit the (same content) services page, I had to go through 60+ sites!

What I’m starting to doubt, as per your answer…?is that there should be an existing wordpress site where the mapped page is pointing to. or not? I believe the documentation says the page shown will be the one “categorized” in my main site… and since you said the plugin is “for multisite” a next question arises:

Did you mean that because this plugin outputs a multisite structure?
or because it HAS to be run on an already-Multisite installation.

In short, No, I don’t want all the domains showing one site.

I want all the domains showing some pages with “shared content” which edition is in one place, but there will be unique pages for each domain too.

What I should have asked is:

Is this compatible with the domain mapping plugin?

So I expect this plugin allows me to mark pages as category “site1” to get

https://www.site1.mynetwork.com

and then use the domain mapping to convert it to

https://www.site1.com

No, but that’s not how MULTISITE works anyway, so that’s besides the point.

You would POST in site1 to get it to show in site1.mynetwork.com, and then you would domain map to REDIRECT it to site1.com

Not sure if anyone can help me here. I’m a bit of a noob, and never worked with subdomains before. If someone can just tell me if the following scenario can work, and if there’s any documentation on getting this set up- please advise.

Let’s say I have a site called https://www.test.com with WP and a template installed.

I want to have subdomains such as https://www.subby1.test.com .
I want to be able to manage these pages from within my WP installation at https://www.test.com , I do not want to have to insall WP at the subdomain.

Does this make sense? I really just want it to work like a regular website where it would normally be https://www.test.com/subby1, but I’m being told that for SEO purposes that the subdomain for subby1.test.com would be better.

Yes. That’s the normal behavior of wordpress MU with the WP-subdomain plugin installed. You don’t need to have wp installed under those other domains, just under test.com, but you’ll have all the site’s content in different dashboards all under test.com. WordPress MultiSIte can manage a site at subby1.test.com, but you will have separate admin areas per site. And as for SEO, it’s about even these days.
