    Better detection by wordpress.com would result is lower hit counts by wordpress.com, resulting in the WP Statistics values being higher.

    Which if I understand correctly is what your seeing?

    Oh. So you are saying better detection = lower hit count. I assumed it was the opposite because better detection would mean all the hits are captured. So on what basis is WP Statistics counting the hits? I mean why are there extra hits in the WP Statistics count?

    WP Statistics captures 100% of the hits to a site (as long as WordPress loads of course) and we then start excluding hits based on the various methods for detecting bots or other unwanted hits.

    This tends to err on the side of caution, the better the detection of bots the better the hit count reflects real users.
