• I’m hoping someone can help here, this issue definitely is core related…

I’m having an issue with front end posts and image uploads for the Author Role. It does not matter what plugins I use as I have tested this on a fresh wordpress install and get the same issues.

The problem seems to be that ONLY Editor and Admin roles are able to upload media files from the front end (Using the standard ‘Add Media’ WP media library that you get in the Rich Text Editor) When the author role attempts this it says “You don’t have permission to attach files to this post” this error is appearing because the Author role does not have back end access.

How do we fix this? it does not seem to matter what plugins I use. From what I have found online many many many people have this issue and currently the only solution seems to be to add Editor attributes to the author role but this then results in the author having backend access and permission to edit pages and other peoples posts.

As this is a community site this is not an option. ONLY the admin (me) is going to have backend access.

Has anyone got a way I can allow the Author role to attach images to posts via front end without backend access?

Are you using a particular plugin to enable front-end editing?

Yeah, Im using Ultimate Member for the profile etc, and User Submitted Posts for the front end post form.

I have tried this on a plain wordpress install with out UM and attempted other front end post submission forms. Any plugins that use the standard wordpress media uploader hit this issue.

I’m having the same problem ??

    Did you solve it Greg?

    Hi there,

Yes I did, However 10 months is a long time ago and I cannot remember 100% what I had to do…

I think you just need to get a user role editor plugin, and set ‘Author’ to be able to edit pages, delete them etc the same kind of privileges that ‘Editor’ has but you also have to restrict WP admin backend access at the same time, I can disable admin access via Ultimate Member, you may need to find an alternate plugin.

Essentially you need to allow the role permission to access backend features but actually restrict the backend. The problem is that the WP media uploader is a backend system.

I got this working with the ‘User Submitted Posts’ plugin I would recommend trying that with the role editor and see what you get.

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful but if I do remember exactly what I did I will post back and let you know.
