WP Forms Misdirecting Replies
-
I’m currently testing new plugins to replace the now dysfunctional Contact Form 7 and while testing WP Forms, I’m noticing it’s misdirecting replies to the “Send To” email address and ignoring the value entered in the “Reply To” field.
For example, I set up the “Send To” field in the settings tab to “[email protected]” and then send a test email under “[email protected]” as the senter’s email, using the contact form – it sends the email to “[email protected]” just fine, but when I hit reply, I see that the reply’s being incoorectly directed to “[email protected]” rather then the email address I entered in the form when submitting it.
I have the Reply To field in the form’s settings correctly set to “{field_id=”1″}” which is the identifier for the email field, but this is not being used.
Important note from further testing, this issue seems to be coming from email forwarding. The “[email protected]” email forwards all emails to a different email address that I check more frequently, so what seems to be happening is if the email sent by your form gets automatically forwarded, the reply to field gets ignored and the email address it was forwarded from replaces it as the reply to address. This is likely from an error in the headers your form is generating making this error happen when a site admin uses email forwarding, such as to have the form send emails to a general inbox, but have that inbox forward the emails to an inbox that’s regularly monitored.
