WP File Manager I only see the trash
-
I have just installed the free version. I activated the tick box of the trash. Now I can not see any of the other FTP files and simply can not move out of the trash can.
I deleted the WP File Manager and reinstalled it but that did not solve it.
Thanks for your help.

I just see that in the section?Public Root Path, it added in the field ;xyz/. I can not delete this as every time I save it comes back. If I do not delete it and save it adds another ;xyz/.? Could this be it?
Hello,
It looks like the issue you’re facing might be due to insufficient read-write permissions on your hosting. The File Manager plugin requires proper permissions to function correctly, especially when modifying settings like the Public Root Path. The behavior you described—where the Public Root Path keeps adding
;xyz/
and cannot be removed—suggests that the file system settings on your hosting are restricting changes. This is usually controlled at the server level rather than being a plugin issue. You can contact your hosting provider regarding these types of issues. To resolve this, please try to adjust your file/folder permissions:
- Access your server via FTP or cPanel.
- Navigate to your WordPress root directory.
- Check and update permissions for the following directories and files:
wp-admin/
folder → 755 or 750wp-content/
folder → 755wp-config.php
file → 644.htaccess
file (if applicable) → 644
- Save the changes and check if the issue is resolved.
Hosting Provider Assistance
If the issue persists, we recommend reaching out to your hosting provider. They can help verify whether the file permissions are blocking changes and assist in adjusting them.
For your reference, here are guides on changing file permissions for common hosting platforms:
- HostGator (via FTP): How to Change Permissions
- cPanel (General Guide): Managing File Permissions
Thanks,
WP File Manager SupportThanks for the quick reply.
The permissions are set as you suggested and do not solve the problem.
When I installed it yesterday it worked fine on this site. Loging in today I see the problem.
Yesterday I installed it also on 2 other sites (same ISP host) where it works as should today. And toggling the on/of box of the trash does not create a path change.
The fact that it works fine on an other sites would make me think it is not a problem on my ISP site. Or do you think it could be? If so what should I ask my ISP?
Any posible solutions? Like which files to remove or which files to change to solve this? Or what all to remove and do a new instal?
When you install the File Manager plugin and enable the .trash folder, any deleted files are moved to the following location:
?? wp-content/plugins/wp-file-manager-pro/lib/files/.trash
However, if you deactivate and delete the plugin from your website, any files that were previously deleted within File Manager will also be removed permanently.
Could you please provide more details about the issue you’re facing? Additionally, sharing a screen recording would help us better understand and assist you. You can send it to [email protected].
Note: Your ISP does not affect file storage.
We look forward to your response.
Best,
WP File Manager SupportI activated the tick box of the trash. Now I can not see any of the other FTP files and simply can not move out of the trash can.

Recording send to you per email.
Thanks for sharing the screen-recording.
As we can see in the Preference of the WP file manager.
You are pointing it to the incorrect path, that is why it is not loading any files.
Please set the path in the preference to default. Kindly remove “;Moron/” directory in the Public Root Path option.
As indicated in the warning message, modifying this setting may cause the file manager to stop working.
ThanksThanks. First off I did not (as in never) add ?“;Moron/”?it appeared at the same time that it stopped working. And I did see the warning after ?“;Moron/”? appeared, but I can not remove it. if I remove it and save it comes back.
I also see no way to activate the Default. it is there but cannot be changed.
And if I do not remove “;Moron/”? and hit save, it appears twice. “;Moron/;Moron/”. and save again and it is there 3 times. etc.

ChangeAgent. Reason: added info
Our plugin does not modify the Public Root Path automatically, so this behavior is quite strange to us. There is no direct option to reset it to default, but you can manually remove all text from the Public Root Path field and save the settings to use the default path.
If the issue persists, we recommend the following steps:
- Check for Plugin Conflicts: Disable all plugins except WP File Manager and see if the issue still occurs. If it resolves, re-enable plugins one by one to identify the conflicting one.
- Contact Your Hosting Provider: If the problem continues, it may be a server-side issue. We suggest reaching out to your hosting provider and raising the concern with them.
Unfortunately, since this is not something our plugin does, we are unable to provide a direct fix. You may also try testing WP File Manager in a different environment to see if the issue persists.
Thanks for your help.
I talked to my ISP, and they are not able to help.
Since deleting it and reinstalling it brings the error immediately back, could you tell me if there could be any files somewhere that do not get deleted if you delete the plugin? In that case I delete those too.
And no, disabling all other plugins does not do it either.
And by the way, I now have the same problem on two websites. And disabling all other plugins did not do it either on the second site.
