WP eCommerce having trouble with large variation count

I doubt I’m the first one running into this problem, but WP eCommerce is trashing my database. The reason is that I have a fairly large number of ‘varieties’ (~500). When I click ‘edit product’ the system locks up.

Since the product I’m selling is requiring this many varieties, I need to find a solution for this. I’m not sure if an index would resolve this, but I thought I’d submit a post and see if anyone else have encountered this and found a solution for it.
