Suddenly, I no longer have an HTML editor on top of the Post box.

Could I have deleted some file that the HTML editor needs, and therefore it no longer displays?

I don’t use the TinyMC Rich editor – I/m talking about the default HTML editor that is supposed to appear when you uncheck the “Use the visual rich editor when writing” box.

Why is it not showing? How to get it back?

I tried enabling the “visual rich editor” and still nothing. Why no editor? What file/directory is responsible for displaying this? Does a stylesheet come into play?

What could prevent the editor from displaying?

The Default editor *is* the Wysiwyg editor *is* also known as TinyMCE / or “visual Rich editor”.

If you turn that off, you get the “old editor”. It won’t have an HTML button as you can post/edit HTML directly in it.

So, after re-reading your post, I’m not sure exactly what it is you’re trying to see.

There are two places to visit that will affect seeing the wysiwyg editor.

    1) System wide: Options -> writing. Checkbox labeled “Users should use the visual rich editor by default”
    2) User specific: Users -> Your Profile. Scroll down to the bottom for checkbox labeled “Use the visual rich editor when writing”

So let me get this straight. You’re saying that in order to see any kind of toolbar above the post box, I need to be using TinyMCE?

I thought there were two “editors” in WP. And by “editor” I am referring to the toolbar with the buttons that appears above the post box.

Are you saying that the two different toolbars (WYSIWYG and HTML view) are in fact part of the same “editor”, namely TinyMCE?

If that’s so, then what I am looking for is the HTML view toolbar in TinyMCE.

But I do not want a WYSIWYG editor. I only want a simple HTML toolbar that makes it easy to select text and wrap in HTML tags, insert <!--more--> tags, etc.

Is there a plugin or third-party product available that provides this kind of HTML “editor”?

Most of the plugins and “editors” I’ve seen are only WYSIWYG… yuk…

You’re saying that in order to see any kind of toolbar above the post box, I need to be using TinyMCE?

Both editors have toolbars over the post box.

    Correct.

Close. I’m saying that the wysiwyg editor (aka TinyMCE) is the one that has a HTML toolbar button.
That toolbar button isn’t on the “old” editor (if you disable wysiwyg) as it is not needed. The old editor lets you do HTML right there in the Post Box.

If that’s so, then what I am looking for is the HTML view toolbar in TinyMCE.

But I do not want a WYSIWYG editor. I only want a simple HTML toolbar that makes it easy to select text and wrap in HTML tags, insert <!--more--> tags, etc.

Yeah, that’s why I suggested turning off that Wysiwyg/tinyMCE thing.

    Sorry, still unclear…

Are you saying that I will not see an HTML toolbar after turning off TinyMCE?

You’ll still see a toolbar. But it won’t have an HTML button on it. As that won’t be necessary. That editor handles html just fine. As code.

Ok, a picture may be of use here:

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m looking for – and what I had until it suddenly vanished.

So that toolbar has nothing to do with TinyMCE?

Any idea how I get it, reinstall it, and/or fix it?

Does anyone know of a plugin that provides a nice HTML (not WYSIWYG) editor? Something that looks like this:

    https://www.solo-technology.com/images/old_wp_editor.png

but maybe has a few more features?

Can you put up a screenshot of what you have after you disabled the wysiwyg thing?

Should look just like mine, I’d think?

If you took out everything between the word “post” and the post box in your screenshot, that’s what I have.

There is just the title field and the post box – no toolbar.

Even if I enable the WYSIWYG editor, still nothing is there.

So I have to manually type every html tag, which is a pain in the neck.

Dunno if this will be useful or not: What OS and Browser are you using? Javascript enabled?

oy vey. Did I mention I HATE JavaScript….

    thanks for the tip.

Hi, same problem – no rich display, no editing toolbar of any kind. I am using the latest version [2.0.3] of Safari (everything shows up correctly in Firefox), JavaScript enabled. Hope this information is useful… Thanks for all the work on WordPress!

Yeah… Safari and TinyMCE (aka the wysiwyg thing) just don’t play very well together yet.

I’m having the opposite problem – I disabled the visual editor and now it won’t appear again (yes, I have the box checked in both places).
