I backed up my MySQL database using phpMyAdmin, which was pretty simple.

Now I’ve been trying to figure out which files I need to backup the blog it’s self.

I tried using FileZilla Client, but it always wants to download everything on my server, including each and every theme in my wordpress install.

I’m wondering if there is a plugin that will download only what I need for the blog to work, plus the database, and do it on a regular schedule in a easy to use format with reliable restores.

Thanks for any input you may have to offer.

    Try this one:

    It says…

Your WordPress site consists of the following files:

    1. WordPress Core Installation
    2. WordPress Plugins
    3. WordPress Themes
    4. Images and Files
    5. Javascripts, PHP scripts, and other code files
    6. Additional Files and Static Web Pages

Problem is that description is vague, so I don’t know exactly which folders or files I should be backingup.

Will the plugin figure that out for me, or do I need more information?

If you’re staying up to date with WordPress, you really only need to backup your wp-config.php file and your /wp-content/ directory, as you can always download WordPress again if you need to restore the core files.

So all I would have to do is reinstall WordPress, then overwrite wp-config.php, and /wp-content/, then restore my database ?

Exactly, as long as you keep WordPress up to date. For example, you wouldn’t be able to restore a 2.9.2 blog using freshly downloaded 3.0.1 files without upgrading first.

    Got it.
