WP and image headers = strange crop size

  • Ever since we updated to the latest WP version, changing out the header doesn’t work properly anymore. My expert graphic designer makes headers with flair for my epic WP blog. (AI CS6 exports to PNG transparent)

    However, something changed(not in a workflow) and now the 985x250px header size has messed up the WP cropping tool.

    Pre-cropping the image in Preview produces the same result, a huge transparent canvas that does not show in AI which is a scaled up ratio of the header.

    For reference one of the exported image dimensions 2048×1592 (4:3 ratio approx)

    We can’t figure out why WP won’t let me crop it down to the correct size or why the canvas is not being trimmed.
    Any thoughts?

    Yes, everything is always kept up-to-date, latest WP Version = 4.7.2
